TEMPORARY COVID RETAIL HOURS: Mon-Sat Noon-2pm, or by appointment (please call)
Gary Chen's long-awaited book, They Call Me Stein On Vine, a personal history of Gary's life centered around Hollywood's famous Stein on Vine, is finally finished, printed and available for sale at Amazon.com (in both book and Kindle versions). "By fate, I ended up owning Stein-on-Vine (the jazz music landmark in Hollywood, California): the professional musical instrument store that has been an essential and beloved part of the touring and local musician's world for over 60 years. Virtually every record, movie and TV show produced by Hollywood since WWII has some connection to Stein-on-Vine. It has been a place where the greatest jazz musicians gather to laugh, drink, gossip and play." Read about the book here, and order today by clicking on the Amazon logo below.
Stein On Vine, also known as Stein Music Co., located across the street from the Musicians Union, has been in Hollywood since the late 1940's. The store caters to professional musicians, specializing in new and used instruments, supplies and repairs for jazz musicians all over the world. Owner Gary Chen-Stein stocks all jazz instruments, including all brass and woodwinds, a large selection of violins, and specializes in acoustic basses, from 1950's Kays to 300-year-old Italian instruments. With skilled repairs done on the premises, Stein On Vine's full-time technicians can repair, rebuild and/or refurbish any acoustic instrument.
Stein's is world famous for the place where all the jazz greats "hang out," and its customer list includes Ray Brown, Cedar Walton, Alfred McKibbon, Freddy Hubbard, Billy Eckstien, Phil Woods, Benny Goodman, Stan Getz... well, basically everybody. For strings, reeds, mouthpieces, cables, music, instruments, repairs, etc., professional jazz musicians (and others!) making their living in or just passing through Los Angeles go to Stein On Vine.
Please check out this website for Los Angeles Jazz history and musician photos, quality professional new, used and rare instruments for sale and/or rent, complete repair services for winds and strings, and a full inventory of all acoustic instrument accessories. Please call today with ANY questions about their sales, rental and repair services, or to ask about their current inventory of new and used acoustic basses, horns, winds and fiddles. Gary ships worldwide and speaks fluent English, Mandarin Chinese and "jazz."
